No doubt you will have ideas and assumptions about what gay pubs and clubs are like. The best way to find out is to experience them for yourself.

Going to gay pub or club for the first time can be a daunting experience, it is best not to go by yourself. Try going to a gay youth group in your area – this can be a good way to make other gay friends to go out with, or if you have come out to your friends maybe they will go with you.

The gay scene can vary depending on where you live – cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham have a variety of venues but even rural areas usually have one or two gay bars.

You may have heard that gay clubs only play dance and chart music but you’ll find that there are is usually a lot more choice on offer, especially in bigger towns and cities.

You should always think of your personal safety when you are out in pubs and clubs – if you go home with someone make sure your friends know where you are going and who with.

Be aware of how much you are drinking. There is information here on drugs and alcohol - educate yourself on how much is too much.

Alcohol and drugs can lead to you taking risks like having unsafe sex. Never leave your drink unattended as it could get spiked.

The gay scene isn’t for everyone – you may find out that you just don’t like it. If so there are other ways to meet people – check out youth groups or gay social groups.
